Massage Therapy Techniques

Deep Tissue Massage

This technique uses slow strokes with deep pressure to target deeper layers of the muscle tissue. The therapist will usually use thumbs, fingertips, or elbows for deep tissue work. This technique is typically used for pain relief.

Trigger Point Massage

When a muscle is overused, a trigger point can develop in the muscle. When pressure is applied to a trigger point, it refers pain to a different area of the body. When using trigger point therapy techniques, the therapist will apply direct pressure, with the thumbs, fingertips, or elbows, onto the trigger point to release the tension. Once the pain has subsided the therapist will slowly and carefully let up the pressure.

Swedish Massage

This technique uses long gentle strokes and circular motions that promote relaxation. Swedish massage is your basic relaxation massage. The therapist normally uses five different strokes in this type of massage:

  • Effleurage (long gliding strokes),
  • Petrissage (kneading),
  • Cross fiber friction (slow deep circular motions using thumbs),
  • Tapotement (tapping, slapping, pounding),
  • and Vibration (fingers pressed on the muscle and shaken rapidly).

Pregnancy Massage

Expecting mothers can begin receiving pregnancy massage at 14 weeks and continue until 6 weeks postpartum. This type of massage requires specific positioning ( sidelying) and is used to promote relaxation, ease muscle tension, and reduce anxiety.
